Therapist Profile Hi. My name is Laura Tsang. I am a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist in the State of Washington.
My therapeutic orientation to counseling is based on the intersystems approach. I see families as individual units with inherent resistance, boundaries, alliances, structures, coalitions, and rules. These family units are thus interlocking systems of individuals in their social and cultural contexts. The presenting problems are only symptoms. I use many different techniques such as genograms to obtain information from my clients' family of origin and their relationships to current situations. I believe the information can help me understand my clients more comprehensively and allow me to treat the core problems rather than just the symptoms. I use different frameworks in marriage and family therapy, such as Psychoanalytic, Experiential, Structural, Cognitive-Behavioral, Bowen Family System, Strategic, and Solution-Focused Family Therapy.
I graduated from the University of Manitoba, Canada, in October of 1997, with a Master of Science Degree in Family Studies, with the research concentration of marital happiness. After I moved to the United States, I completed my post-graduate program in Marriage and Family Therapy in the University of Nevada, Las Vegas. In 2003 I completed the 120 CEU certification program at Maimonides University as part of the requirements of certification by the American Board of Sexology as a Clinical Sexologist.
I am a
Clinical Member of the American
Association of Marriage and Family Therapy (AAMFT) and Washington Association of Marriage and Family
Therapy (WAMFT); Clinical Sexologist and Diplomate of The American Board of Sexology (ABS); member
of American Association of Sex
Educators, Counselors, and Therapists (AASECT); and member of
Chinese Family
for Christ (CFC). I was formerly on staff at Presbyterian Counseling Service
(PSC) from 2002 to 2005. I am currently concentrating on my private practice in West Seattle.
In addition to English, I also speak Cantonese. My upbringing in Hong Kong and Canada gave me an unique multicultural view of the world and an openness to different perspectives and orientation.
Being a Marriage and Family Therapist is not only my profession, but also my hobby. I want both myself and my clients to enjoy our sessions and experience personal growth together. As personal and relational problems are resolved interactively, family unity and marital happiness will be achieved. It is hoped that our work together will make the world a better place, one family at a time.
